The Natural Philosophy of James Clerk Maxwell by Peter M. Harman, X

The Natural Philosophy of James Clerk Maxwell by Peter M. Harman, X
This book provides an introductory yet comprehensive account of James Clerk Maxwell's (1831-79) physics c james maxwell and world view. The argument is structured by a focus on the fundamental themes that shaped Maxwell's science: analogy c james maxwell and geometry, models c james maxwell and mechanical explanation, statistical representation c james maxwell and the limitations of dynamical reasoning, c james maxwell and the relation between physical theory c james maxwell and its mathematical description. This approach, which considers his physics as a whole, bridges the disjunction between Maxwell's greatest contributions: the concept of the electromagnetic field c james maxwell and the kinetic theory of gases. Maxwell's work c james maxwell and ideas are viewed historically in terms of his indebtedness to scientific c james maxwell and cultural traditions, of Edinburgh experimental physics, c james maxwell and of Cambridge mathematics c james maxwell and philosophy of science, which nurtured his career. Peter M. Harman is Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University. He has published primarily on the history of physics c james maxwell and natural philosophy in the 18th c james maxwell and 19th centuries, the period from Newton to Maxwell. His previous books include Energy, Force, c james maxwell and Matter (Cambridge, 1982), The Investigation of Difficult Things (Cambridge, 1992), After Newton: Essays on Natural Philosophy (Variorum, 1993), The Scientific Letters c james maxwell and Papers of James Clerk Maxwell, volume 1 (Cambridge, 1990), volume 2 (Cambridge, 1995).

Matter and Motion by James Clerk Maxwell,

Matter and Motion by James Clerk Maxwell,
This primer on physics, written in 1877 by the most eminent physicist of the 19th century, is intended as a brief introduction to Newtonian mechanics for students c james maxwell and educated lay readers. Though by modern standards this small work covers no new ground, it attests to the logical rigor c james maxwell and powers of elucidation of a scientific genius, whose insights into electromagnetism c james maxwell and the chemistry of gases were pivotal to the great discoveries in physics during the 20th century. Einstein described Maxwell's influence on the scientific understanding of the physical universe as "the most profound c james maxwell and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." Maxwell's ideas also laid the groundwork for Max Planck's subsequent development of the quantum hypothesis. In seven concise c james maxwell and lucidly written chapters, Maxwell covers all the basic concepts of physics: time, space, matter, mass, force, momentum, velocity, acceleration, laws of motion, work, energy, gravitation, c james maxwell and many other ideas. This edition also includes a chapter on equations of motion from Maxwell's classic Electricity c james maxwell and Magnetism, plus two appendices, one on the relativity of motion c james maxwell and the other on the Principle of Least Action. Complete with many useful illustrations to clarify the concepts discussed in the text, this accessible work is well suited for history of science courses or as a still-relevant introduction to basic physics for the average reader.

James Laidlaw Maxwell, Jnr - James Laidlaw Maxwell, Junior, (1876–August 12 1951) was a pioneering modern English Presbyterian medical missionary to Taiwan. He was the son of James Laidlaw Maxwell, Senior,

James Clerk Maxwell - James Clerk Maxwell (June 13, 1831–November 5, 1879) was a Scottish mathematical physicist, born in Edinburgh. Maxwell developed a set of equations expressing the basic laws of electricity and magnetism as well as the Maxwell distribution in the kinetic theory of gases.
